Great Central Railway to be Unified for the First Time in Fifty Years at 125th Anniversary Weekend (16-17 March)

Originally opened to passenger traffic in 1899, the Great Central Railway later became part of the London and North Eastern Railway in 1923, then part of British Rail in 1948. Closed in stages, the last trains ran in 1969. We are continuing the celebrations to mark our 140th Year of becoming a cathedral with our special exhibition Cathedral 140. The exhibition will showcase 140 objects over 10 months from Feb to November 2024. The objects for March will focus on the building of the minster as we know it today. We will learn more about how the building was built and the different architectural styles you can see on display.
