The wait is finally over. Victoria Centre has confirmed that Nottingham’s much-loved Emett Clock is coming home – returning to its rightful place in the heart of the centre.
In a move that will delight generations of Nottingham shoppers, the iconic clock will return to the part of Victoria Centre where so many people remember it, outside John Lewis, marking a major moment in the landmark’s history.
For decades, the Emett Clock has held a special place in the hearts of Nottingham people. More than just a clock, it became a meeting place, a city-centre landmark and an unmistakable part of a visit to Victoria Centre. Now, following years of calls to see it returned to its former home and an extensive programme of restoration, that wait is almost over.
Nigel Wheatley, Centre Director at Victoria Centre, said: “It’s the news we know so many people across Nottingham and the wider region have been waiting to hear: the Emett Clock is coming home.
We know just how much this clock means to the city and how strongly people feel about seeing it back in South Square. It’s part of the fabric of Victoria Centre and holds so many memories for generations of our visitors.
To finally be able to say it’s returning to where so many people believe it belongs is incredibly exciting. We can’t wait to see it take pride of place at the heart of Victoria Centre once again.”
Created by celebrated British artist and inventor Rowland Emett, the extraordinary kinetic clock has been part of Victoria Centre since 1973, becoming one of Nottingham’s most recognisable and best-loved landmarks.
Preparations for its homecoming are now underway in South Square, with the clock set to make its much anticipated return this winter.
As excitement builds ahead of its return, Victoria Centre is also inviting people across Nottingham to share their memories of the much-loved landmark.
From meeting friends and family beneath the clock to childhood shopping trips and photographs from years gone by, Victoria Centre wants to hear the stories that have made the Emett Clock such a special part of the city for generations.
